2. How do I change where my domain is hosted?

Domain Name System (DNS) is the way that Internet DOMAIN NAMES are located and translated into INTERNET PROTOCOL addresses. A domain name is a meaningful and easy-to-remember "handle" for an Internet address (eg. AXIOMDESIGN.co.uk) DNS is a system of servers located throughout the Internet that has been set up to handle Internet connections and the routing of e-mail.

To move your domain name hosting you will need to get your current hosting provider to change the nameservers to the new company.

You can change the name servers for a domain name as often as you like but it may take up to 48 hours for the new information to be updated around the Internet.

Also you will need to change the A records.

This will be the IP address to which the user would be sent for each domain name. This will have to be changed by your current hosting provider, and can be obtained by contacting your new host.

Why use an A Record?

You may want to use an A Record because your web host doesn't provide you with the email forwarding (MX) or Cname features. When a domain name expires that does not mean that the domain name will be available for registration. Many registrars will keep domain names and auction them off, sometimes to the original owner. When a domain name still shows up in a whois lookup it means that the domain name is not available for registration because the registrar has not released it yet

All hosting companies will have a server address for your domain, e.g.

www44.testhostcompany.com

If you're hosting has been successfully configured you can find out the A record by:

1. Go to Start / Run and type in Command or cmd

2. Then type ping www44.testhostcompany.com

3. The numbers in the [] is the A record address.
